Moventas has landed an 80 million euro deal to supply Areva with gear units for its 5MW offshore turbines.
The Finnish gear manufacturer has already supplied two 5MW medium-speed offshore wind gears to the French energy group’s M500 wind turbines.
The gearing system – which is beginning a year-long testing programme as part of Areva’s machine – strengthens Moventas’ product range for European offshore and hostile environments, says the company.
— We are very pleased to find that Areva Wind trusts our leading expertise in creating technically superior gear solutions for medium-speed and multi-megawatt class drive trains, says Moventas senior vice president of wind gears Arto Lahtela.
AREVA’s M5000 wind turbine has three years operational experience in the German North Sea, and the group is now moving into serial production with its confirmed backlog of 120 machines.
Areva plans to make inroads into other European markets with the M5000, particularly the UK and France.
Moventas was bought last year by the UK’s global engineering group Clyde Blowers in a 100 million euro deal.
