Finnish expertise, stable society and well-functioning infrastructure attracted Japanese MEMS company to Greater Helsinki
Murata Manufacturing, a Japanese electronics company, is aiming to be one of the global leaders in MEMS technology by relying on Finnish expertise. In the beginning of 2012, Murata acquired one of the world’s leading providers of MEMS sensors and a pioneer in its field, VTI Technologies Oy from Vantaa, Finland. After the acquisition, VTI changed its name to Murata Electronics Oy.
VTI’s special expertise in MEMS (micro electro mechanical systems) technology was the main reason Murata invested in Finland. The company believes that the demand of this technology will grow strongly as it enables even smaller devices to be manufactured and wants to grow its own MEMS business significantly.
– VTI has the best possible expertise on MEMS as well as their own 3D MEMS technology, says Mr. Shinji Ushiro, CEO of Murata Electronics Oy.
– It is certainly thanks to the Finnish technology-oriented culture, high quality education and hard working spirit that VTI has become a company of such great value. Naturally Finland is also a good place to invest: the society is stable, infrastructure in excellent and quality of life is good. VTI’s location in Vantaa, not far away from the airport, is also a plus, Mr. Ushiro explains.
The acquisition brings great benefits to both companies. For Murata, it gives access to an established customer base in Automotive and Medical industries, and a great opportunity to grow Murata’s MEMS business. Murata Electronics (former VTI), on the other hand, will benefit from Murata’s extensive sales network all over the world.
– It goes without saying that Murata Electronics Oy’s business will grow, says Mr. Ushiro.
Murata’s intention is to develop Murata Electronics Oy as Murata’s global MEMS R&D and production center. This means also new career possibilities for the company’s employees in Vantaa.
– We have a great factory in Vantaa with highly-specialized technology, manufacturing products for very special applications that in their end-use applications improve safety and quality of life. We are showing that it is possible to have electronics components manufacturing also in Finland if you are specialized enough. Both our employees and Helsinki area in general can be proud of this great company.
