Chinese-owned company Spreadtrum Finland Oy started up operations in Oulu in January 2015. The news was first reported by Kaleva. The decision to establish a unit in Oulu was made already in October. On top of the unit in Oulu, the company also has a new office in Helsinki.
The company’s goal is to manufacture a new, effective LTE modem.
“High-level design of the modem is being carried out in Oulu. We are focusing on the initial development of systems and algorithms,” CEO Tapio Markki told Kaleva.
Approximately 35 employees were recruited to the semiconductor manufacturer’s development unit in Kontinkangas when it was established. Currently, new recruitments may be on the cards, but there are no expansions in store.
The majority of the employees were formerly employed with the now defunct Broadcom unit in Oulu.
