(datacentres.com) World class technology and top locations persuaded Atos to invest in a global cloud service centre in Helsinki.
International information technology services company Atos is the main client of a new highly energy efficient data centre that will be completed by the Finnish company Academica in Helsinki’s Viikinmäki district around the end of this year. The new TIER3/TIER4 data centre is located in a 2900 square metre former storage building, securely constructed on solid bed rock, rented by the Finnish energy company Helsingin Energia.
The Viikinmäki project is a continuation of an earlier investment by Atos in a data centre built by Academica and Helsingin Energia in the Suvilahti district of Helsinki in 2011, which won the ICT Project of the Year award in Finland last year for its intelligent energy system.
Green data centre services
According to Tapio Koskinen, who is in charge of outsourcing services at Atos Finland, the data centres in Suvilahti and Viikinmäki form a duplicate solution as one of the company’s global cloud service centres.
“When Viikinmäki is completed, we are only offering green, energy efficient data centre services in Finland. Atos has selected Helsinki as a strategic location thanks to its well-functioning infrastructure, attractive location and excellent technology know-how,” says Koskinen.
In Viikinmäki, a heat pump will be installed in the data centre to capture the heat produced by the facility’s cooling process, which can then be utilised on site or channelled into Helsingin Energia’s district heating network to heat up homes and water in the city. When working at full capacity, the heat produced by the data centre can provide heating and hot water for about 4500 new 80 square metre apartments in Helsinki.
